There’s a few reasons why the law of attraction does not work. In most cases, it comes down to awareness. After watching The Secret (several years ago), I was convinced that my life would suddenly and dramatically change very quickly. But I didn’t understand the law of attraction and how to apply the law of attraction effectively.
I thought I could just do some meditation, think about what I wanted, and wait for miracles to unfold in my life. They did of course, but I lacked the awareness to see myself as the barrier to new and good things. Change happens slowly and when you let go of the old. If you maintain a consistent view of the world which is unbending, you’ll keep attracting and manifesting much of the same.
Why The Law Of Attraction Does Not Work
For me the law of attraction didn’t work because whenever I was presented with new opportunities to grow out of my comfort zone, I blocked myself from taking action for some made up reasons which were essentially based in fear.
The result? I would maintain the status quo. The payoff? I maintained life as it was, in my comfort zone! At the time, my comfort zone was more important to me than change, even though I didn’t realise it.
I suspect this is the main reason why the law of attraction doesn’t work for most people. Oh and belief. Belief is a main reason!
Why The Law Of Attraction Does Not Work – Belief
“Whether a man believes he can or he can’t, he’s right” – Henry Ford
For starter if you don’t believe in the law of attraction, or you have your doubts, that’s not going to help!
In Napoleon Hill’s book Think and Grow Rich, he talks about the mind as a “fertile garden spot”, in which “weeds will grow in abundance, if seeds of a more desirable nature are not sewn therein”.
Those “weeds” are your doubts and fears. Give them attention and they grow. The law of attraction does not work for many people because they are too busy giving attention to their doubts, fears, excuses and problems. As you focus on those things, they grow and become bigger.
After my first watch of the film The Secret, I was filled with enthusiasm. I began to focus on what I wanted. But soon came the doubts and fears. “How would I attain these things?”. “Perhaps it was too far fetched?”. Within a month or two, I had forgotten about the film and moved back into my old habits of moaning and complaining.

Why The Law Of Attraction Does Not Work – Habit
“Chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are too heavy to be broken” Warren Buffet
We all have habits in our lives which are difficult to break and change. Our habits rule us not our thoughts. Motivation gets you started but habit keeps you going. Our thoughts are only the tiny droplets of intention which, over time create beliefs. We then act out our lives based on these beliefs.
Because our habits are so engrained into who we think we are, it’s difficult to change habits of a lifetime, especially over a short period of time. This is why the law of attraction does not work for many. People think they can magically create a life of their dreams, but without any actual change in who they are.
After watching The Secret I was inspired and uplifted. But a month or two later, I had fallen back into my old habits and thought patterns. My daily habits hadn’t changed. I was simply entertained by a movie, but took no action!
Two of the best books on creating new habits are The Morning Miracle by Hal Elrod and Mini Habits by Stephen Guise.
Who You Surround Yourself With
Who do you surround yourself with? It’s fact that you can get a good idea of someone by the people they hang around with. Your income, for example, can usually be determined by taking the average of your 10 closest friends. So, who you are surrounded by has a massive influence on you. We judge ourselves in comparison to others.
If the law of attraction isn’t working for you, perhaps you need to look for better influencers? Are your friends helping you to succeeds and thrive, or do they hold you back.
Of course your friends and family want the best for you, don’t they? But they can only help you achieve the results in life which they, themselves have managed to achieve. If you want something more, they are more likely to have doubts and fears and worry you’re being led astray. This is because they are operating from their comfort zones, beliefs and attitudes.
If you want to use the law of attraction to attract something new, you’ll have to step outside your current comfort zones. This can mean looking outside your current zone of influence for more positive role models.

Taking Responsibility – Blame, Victimhood and Entitlement
When we are inspired we can believe in concepts such as the law of attraction. But when we are low, depressed and things aren’t working, things seem tough. Ultimately we are creating all the time, not just when we do our affirmations or visualisations about what we want.
Our lives come about from our circumstances and opportunities but also from how we feel and what we believe.
Without taking 100% responsibility for our lives, we can easily blame others, our parents, bad circumstances and lack of opportunity for our situation. If we make this blaming a habit, it becomes a default “go-to” when things get tough.
Taking responsibility for every aspect of your life gives you the power to make appropriate changes and take the necessary action. With an attitude of blame or entitlement, we can become victims. This mentality disempowers us and puts our lives in the hands of someone else.
We can’t wish for something without taking an active role in attaining it. If our personality is one that’s a victim and looks to blame others, this is the first thing we should change if we want to make positive changes in our lives.
